Backlinks

Basic rules for adding links to a website.

Quality of the links

The quality of the links is more important than its number. 10 strong links can far more effective than 400 weak links from poor websites.

Value of the links

The value of links for positioning purposes varies and depends on many factors. A link from a website that is very well known in some subject niches will a have a different value from one from a second-rate discussion board. If you are positioning your website for given phrases you must try to gain links from websites and directories whose subject is related to your website.

Spreading linking over time

Adding links should be spread over time. The important thing is to add links continuously, let’s say 5 a day, and regularly over at least several months.

Link titles

It is wrong to add links with the same title all the time (especially if the links are added quickly), as it entails the risk of being penalised by the search engines, in the form of a filter on a given word

Indexing a sub-page with a link

Before you add a page to a paid directory or buy a link, check if the sub-page of the directory where the link will be placed has been indexed by search engines. If this sub-page has not been indexed, the link is worthless. If this is the case, try adding it to a different category (related to your field of activity) of the directory or add it to a different directory.

Updating content

An interesting way to attract a regular group of readers is introducing updated content. It also has a very positive impact on the positioning of your website as Google loves frequently-updated pages. In these contents you acquire new key words for your site.

Title Tags

The most important element of the document heading for search engines is the TITLE tag. For this reason, it is worthwhile to pay attention to good editing of the title of each page. It also appears in search results of all search engines so its attractiveness increases the chances of entering the website.

All search engines use this element to describe a page. The content of the TITLE element appears in search results as a link to the website that was found. Good coding practice calls for putting it in the first position.

What should not be included in the title tag ?

Many web designers are erroneously convinced that it should include your company name. It is a good idea only if your company is well known and people will search for it using its name – e.g. Coca-Cola. It should be assumed that most prospective clients will be looking for products or services and not a particular company name. If, for instance, your company is called “Blue Bird” inserting only your company name in the title tag will be a serious mistake. If are absolutely convinced you should insert your company name in the title tag, put it at the end after important key information. Most search engines are case-insensitive. However for two (AltaVista and Hotbot) of the top six search engines this makes a significant difference. For this reason it is advisable to repeat the company name, e.g. “BLUE BIRD” and “Blue Bird”. You should remember not to put the repeated items next to each other, but separate them with key words and phrases. The general rule behind constructing websites is to plan the content including the key word for the subject. These words are then inserted in TITLE, KEY WORD and DESCRIPTION.
